If you were to ask people on the streets of Philadelphia a "sample" question regarding what flowers they want, or would be giving, for Valentine's Day you would almost certainly get a lot of people who are going to exclaim "Roses". There would probably also be a few people who talk about tulips and carnations - but roses are almost always at the number one spot.
I don't know where the rose tradition started and to be honest I don't care that much to look it all up, what I do care about is letting everyone know about options - and even if you know you have them, its good to be reminded that you can use them.
Roses are expensive. This is probably not shocking to anyone who is reading this but if you plan on giving roses for Valentine's Day, be prepared to shell out a chunk of change. What are some other options that might lessen the burden? As I mentioned above carnations and tulips are great alternatives but the main thing to keep in mind is what it is the person you are buying flowers for really likes. I that person likes blue - go with blue, if they like dandelions... get some of those. On special, personal holidays like Valentine's Day you are encouraged not to follow the status quo. Get creative - that will really show them that you care.
Now, finding a florist... that is a whole other story. Can anyone recommend one?
